| Please email us your comments at: feedback@shunyata.com today! July '2010 Grant, I just wanted to thank you for your patient listening and excellent advice on selecting power cords for my system. I ended up buying Hydra V -Ray and two Anaconda one for the amp and the other for Hydra. Now I have the entire power distribution system from Shunyata with good combination of shielded and CX cables based on your feedback. The audio video experience has changed so dramatically that I have no words except WOW. We were planning to buy a new TV but now we feel there is no need. Thanks again and convey my appreciation to your production team -- they are the best. Best regards, Akbar A. Los Angeles
April '09 I've been breaking in the Hydra with a fan and have about 65 hrs on it. At this point the sound is so vastly improved, I'm utterly speechless. I never imagined that power conditioning could have this kind of effect. All of the superlatives I've read are no hype. It's just amazing! The soundstage, imaging, resolution, and dynamics are on an entirely different level. I'm so impressed I've ordered a Python CX cable to the replace the Copperhead. I can only imagine how good it's going to sound; I can't wait! Thanks to everyone at Shunyata. I just wish I had bought these products sooner. Sincerely, Jim D February '09 Dear Caelin and Grant, This is a "follow up" letter and comment to the comments that I had originally left for you about my experiences with the Shunyata Hydra V-Ray. After I left those comments for you, I had purchased a second V-Ray, so that I could use one for my analogue front end components on a dedicated line and another for my digital components on a separate dedicated line. The improvements in sound were not subtle! They were an order of magnitude better than just upgrading the Hydra to the V-Ray. I did not think, from a power conditioning standpoint that things could get any better than that! Was I wrong! I recently took delivery of two Shunyata V-Ray II model power conditioners for my system's front end. (One for analogue and the other digital on separate dedicated power lines.) My expectations were somewhat muted, as what I had before had sounded most excellent, but boy was I wrong! The improvements wrought by your updated design were transpiring! The first thing that I had noted was an increased sense of relaxation when listening to music. This sense of relaxation came from a heightened awareness of the music sounding more like music. The bass is not only more pronounced, but articulated in a more harmonically correct manner. The instruments and voices now also sound more harmonically rich and dense. There is more detail, not etched, but the natural harmonic kind. The vocalist sounds more human singing in the room, a guitar sounds more like a guitar playing in the room, and so forth. Many lyrics that were once obscured are now laid bare. The sound stage is now a bit wider and deeper, and the images on that sound stage are even more focused with a greater sense of ambiance or "air" between the instruments and the vocalists. If I was happy with the sound of my audio system before, I am now on cloud nine! There are two salient points that I would like to make. The first is that I am the owner of Mark Levinson "Reference" electronics (Transport, DAC, preamp, and amplification) that was manufactured under Madrigal Audio Labs. I love how my electronics sound, how they look, and how they operate "as one" with their ergonomics and interconnectivity. This equipment, which I had purchased new, was and is an investment in pleasure and not as a "flavor of the month" impulsive purchase. I have lived with my current electronics for about a decade and I am not motivated to change. I am very content to live with what I have. Sure, there may be better gear that is currently produced that does one or two things better than what I own, however when I take the whole package into account -- the sound, looks, and interconnectivity, I am remorse to make any changes. This is where your equipment comes into play, not only in my system, but for many audiophiles, especially in these recessionary times, who for whatever reasons, are keeping the electronics that they currently own -- your series V-Ray II allows all of us to enjoy what we currently own and allows our electronics to perform at even a higher level than ever! In this regard, I have viewed my original V-Rays to be the "heart" of my audio rig and that thought solidifies even further with the V-Ray II models that I now own and enjoy! In the rare even that I change my electronics, I know that my V-Ray II's will elicit optimal performance from whatever electronic component that may be plugged into them! Thank you for allowing me to continue to enjoy my current electronics by allowing them to perform at a higher level than I ever imagined! The second point is that before I took the plunge to the V-Ray II status, I was able to discuss the new V-Ray designs with Grant, as well as with Chris (The gentleman who built these new V-Ray's for me). My livelihood involves dealing with hand made collectibles, and as such my wife and I have a heightened appreciation for hand made objects and objects of art. Your products fit perfectly into our aesthetic. They are hand crafted. By being able to talk with you have made us feel even more special and appreciate what you have created! I could not imagine doing this with Monster Cable or Sony for example! (Imagine talking to the gentleman who is building your Monster power conditioner! Not only would this be a dream, but an impossibility!) Everyone likes to feel special and appreciated, your products fit that bill, as it is not only what you are crafting, but the personalities behind them. In these times where everyone lives in similarly designed homes, drives similar looking autos with no more chrome or personality, wears similar clothing purchased at identical stores in all of our "cookie cutter" suburban strip malls and so forth, our audio systems help to make us audiophiles, who play in '"the high end" feel special. Shunyata does that in a big way. Those of us who are fortunate enough to own and enjoy your equipment know and understand a level of enjoyment that is only experienced by a relative small handful of music and film lovers around the globe. You are special -- as designers, and craftsmen, as a result you have special products that as a final result allow the end users to feel very special, both in pride of ownership and pride of unsurpassed performance. In summation, thank you for your continued research and resultant products that make our entertainment systems that much better and more enjoyable! With all my appreciation, RAC PS. I can't wait to try your new King Cobra and Annoconda CX power cables in my audio system! I just wanted to drop you a note to tell you about my experience with the V-Ray product. I have been a Shunyata customer for years. I had been using the original Corian cabinet Hydra in my main system and was reluctant to change because of the color difference between the older Hydra and the newer Hydra (my entire system consists of black components). When the V-Ray came out and it was silver I decided that if I was going to take advantage of the improvements you have made I would need to go silver. My system is pretty mature now and in 2007 did not go through any significant changes. Usually every year I change something. My system is an all Cary Audio, all tube, system that would retail for about $80K. The only change I made last year was to change out the original Hydra for a V-Ray. I have noticed that since I have made the change that my system keeps sounding better and better. I have noticed that my CD’s all seem to sound the best they have ever sounded. My LPs all sound the best they have ever been as well. It occurred to me about two months ago that this drastic change had to be attributed to the addition of the V-Ray. I don’t know how this thing does it but it have taken my already great sounding system up several notches. I hear more detail, more space and a better soundstage. If someone else told me this I would tell them that they are nuts but I know what I hear and what I hear is better sound. Great product. Keep it up (but make them in black too J). John A. December I am very pleased to relate that the V-Ray was quite a surprise. The V-Ray exceeded my expectations after having used the Hydra 8. Musical notes and voices were more defined and more information was revealed. Music was overwhelmingly more involving, especially listening to Rebecca Pidgeon's "Spanish Harlem". I am very pleased with the latest incarnation of the Hydra. I will be trading up to the V-Ray. Thank you for your great products! George D. May Dear Matt: I am a physician scientist at Harvard and a skeptic when it comes to items such as power conditioners and power cords. I have read all the reviews stating how this makes the background quieter and the instruments clearer and more 3D like -- but that is what you read of the reviews of almost every high end piece of audio equipment. My system consisting of a Spectral amp and pre-amp, MartinLogan speakers, MIT cables, and a Sonic Frontier D to A converter sounds rather fantastic. I decided to audition different power conditioners although I thought they help mostly with systems with background hums, etc (which mine doesn’t have). Once the Hydra 8 was in my system, it was if I was truly listening to a live performance. I can’t believe it. The speakers truly evaporated. The goosebumps have almost gone down. I have listened over the past week to almost every CD I have -- it is unbelievable even if did leave me sleep deprived. Even my wife asked me why I didn’t buy this sooner and she normally is not into stereo equipment and can’t usually appreciate the differences when I change a component. I have never sent any comments to a manufacturer but I felt I must contact you. You have truly transformed my audio experience. My only suggestion is that perhaps the Hydra 8 needs to be a mandatory component of any moderate to high end stereo system. Otherwise, one may never realize what your system can truly do and where it can take you. Sincerely, Steve Steven D. Freedman MD, PhD BTW I was one of those who was skeptical about all the hype surrounding the Hydra 8. Demo’d it and became a believer. I sincerely think it brought the equivalent of an power amp upgrade. Your products and service are first rate. January ON THE GUARDIAN... I must say that I was the least bit skeptical about trying out Shunyata's products as I felt my system was already nearing it's best performance for what I could afford. I decided that I would try the products and get rid of my Monster products if they sounded better. The Monster products sounded pretty good in my system. The highs just seemed to be a little rolled off and my sub seemed like it was being chocked at times. I also noticed that my amplifier would produce quite a bit of heat. After purchasing a Guardian 4 unit, diamondback power cable and three venom power cables, I was ready to do some listening. Right away, the bass became deeper and much much louder. The highs that seemed way too relaxed finally became crisp and focused. The amplifier that always seemed to get hot runs a little more than warm even when pushed. After swapping numerous components from cables to speakers to subwoofers, the problem was finally detected, the monster conditioning and stablizing products. A couple weeks after purchasing the products, the sound has now become quite a bit more three dimensional, with a sharp focus in the center of the speakers. I am glad that I decided to try Shunyata products and will never again buy another Monster product. Thanks for providing great customer service, as well as products that are affordable and do exactly what they are supposed to do Chris December ON THE HYDRA V-RAY... Dear Caelin, Grant, and Matt, I have been an avid audiophile for over thirty years. I have been fortunate to have the ability and means to own reference grade electronic and loudspeakers and have a purpose built, sound treated listening room outfitted with an electrical sub panel, grounding system, and more than enough dedicated electric lines. Around 1986 I got into digital, scraping my Goldmund turntable, as I found that records, no matter how good they sounded, always contained some amount of background noise or either in the form of tick and pops, or just plain old low level rumble. The problem with digital is that it created a noise of its own – grunge back on the electric line. I have used various manufactures’ power conditioning equipment over the years, but it was not until I wired my entire system with your Anaconda Alpha Helix power cables, V-Ray conditioner for the front end and Hydra 2 for the amplification, did I realize just how damned great my digital now sounds! My listening room is library quiet – almost eerily so, as again it is an isolated room both acoustically and eclectically from the rest of my home. This room quiet, really allows your Shunyata power conditioning equipment to make my system sound like the sonic equivalent of watching a 35MM film. Everything is simply layered bare in front of me in a 180 degree and three dimensional panoramic vista of sound that is outright scary!!! Voices and musical instruments just hang in air, and when the music gets complex, it is only complex in its composition and performance, not in its conveyance through my loudspeakers. Everything is dead quiet. The high notes sparkle and the low notes growl. Your power conditioning equipment simply makes the music easy on the ears, as the brain has so much less work to do in deciphering the music and its inherent complexities of dynamics, micro dynamics, rhythmic interaction, image placement, sound staging, harmonic nuance, cohesiveness, correctness of timber, and an overall finely delineated “wholeness”. My audio system not only has been elevated to a whole different and much higher level, but it is at a level that I have never heard from any other audio system before! Last week a good friend came over for a visit, and we listened to the music system for several hours. He initially commented on how shockingly quiet my audio system now sounds. After further listening he commented that there was now so much more information coming through my speakers that it was now hard to process – he was hearing familiar recordings that were, in his experience, revealed with much greater fidelity and resolution. At the end of our listening session he commented – Wow! Thank you for sharing that with me! What a treat!!! A few further thoughts – I lived with a Hydra 8 for a couple of months before I upgraded to the V-Ray. While the Hydra 8 was excellent, the V-Ray’s performance is a definite across the board sonic upgrade, easily that of upgrading a major component. I also tried the Python Helix power cables, and I must disagree with Robert Harley’s assessment in Issue 168 of “The Absolute Sound” magazine, where he writes that the Python is 98% of the Anaconda’s performance. From my experience the Python, while a most excellent power cable (better than anything else that I have ever used before it!), does not deliver the bottom half octave of bass nor the micro dynamics of the entire audio range with the same authority of the Anaconda power cable. Perhaps a 20% performance upgrade from the Python to the Anaconda is a more appropriate percentage relationship. In the context my system, where I am using eight Anacondas, all of those 20% performance differentials add up to a huge and stunning total performance upgrade. In summation, I am so pleased with your top grade power conditioning equipment, that it makes all other power conditioning gear that I have employed in my audio system over the past three decades sound simply wrong. I now have a mistrust of all audio reviews that I currently read that were written by reviewers who are not using Shunyata for their power conditioning, as they are not getting a true “read” on the products that they are reviewing without your equipment to properly condition the power! I want to thank you for designing, developing, manufacturing, and marketing such amazing equipment that allows me to enjoy and appreciate my music collection as never before! With all my best, R. A. C. September 2006 Thank you for your reply. I know you must get many emails. I have purchased the Python Alpha Helix and it will arrive tomorrow. I'm so glad that I took the time to audition the Hydra 8 and Anaconda Alpha Helix. I was ready to buy an Exactpower (EP 15) and decided to try the Hydra in my system. After listening to the Hydra, there was not doubt. It was superior in every musically meaningful way. Thanks again for your help. You now have another loyal customer who will spread the word. Regards, John May 2006 ...I first installed the Hydra Model-2... keeping in mind your recommendation to elevate and isolate the unit.I've since made enough room to put the hydra on its feet with the help of 3 small aluminim cones. Well, you guys weren't kidding. The detail, soundstage and bass detail improved ten fold. I am simply shocked by the improvement. I called the audio sales man that sold me these units and urged him to advise customers to pay close attention to this step. The improvement was not subtle,It was a critical optimization of your excellent product. Peter Cummings April 2006 April 2006 March 2006 March 2006 April 2005 Matt, Words cannot discribe how incredible the Hydra Model-6 and the PowerSnakes sound. I don't know if I just happen to have the right combination of components but my sound stage is very 3 dimentional, absolutely incredible and tonal balance is perfect. Transient attacks are just explosive and precise. The low frequencies are tight deep and very solid. The high frequencies have that natural holographic harmonic resonance that you hear up close and personal as if they were live. Instruments such as cymbals actually sound as if they are a shower of sparks falling down right in front of you. Everything sounds warm, natural and very liquid, almost as if you were looking at your sound stage though a sheet of perfectly pure water. Stage positioning of instrumentation is very defined as well as delivering a very soft, precise presentation across the whole sound stage. Oh, and I forgot to mention, my system is dead quiet with no audible floor noise with the volume wide open (no music playing). Caelin Gabriel did a fantastic job designing the Hydra and Snakes. His electronic and electrical design principals are right on the money. The Hydra is very simple, not bulky, non current restricting, and produces no heat or noise and has the most precise filtration points of any conditioner in the world. I have found that a direct AC line of twisted 8 gauge power wire from the electric panel with a dedicated 30 amp breaker at the top of the buss to the hubble connector in the rear of the Hydra works extremely well. Shunyata has the best conditioning products in the world, no doubt about it. Jon November 2004 August 2004 May 2004 April 2004 April 2004 April 2004 March 2004 March 2004 I bought the Guardian 4-HT thru hifi at the soundstation and love it. Works great with my headphone amp -- it's a maxed out home reference and it sounds better with a Diamondback power cable and 4HT. R. Chambers The Shunyata Hydra is a work of art. The looks alone are amazing, and craftsmanship is superb. Sonically, Hydra is out of this world. After the first Hydra was set up in my system, WOW, what a improvement, so much so that I am about to order my second Hydra. The power cords such as the Python will soon be throughout my entire system. Thanks SHUNYATA for making such a GREAT PRODUCT. I recently compared a few power-line units, including Hydra, Richard Grey and Audio Magic. I am very surprised how much difference there is in the sound of each unit. It (Hydra) is the same kind of difference when I up-graded components, may be more. I definitely prefer the Hydra. Sometimes I record CDs professionally. My angle is much higher sound quality, which the hydra is part of. |
